Olympic hair

This is how you wear your hair like an athlete

When I watch the Olympic Games Olympic Games in the evening, I do pay a bit of attention to the looks of all the athletes. I mean, I think it's amazing, that gold medal won by Anna van der Breggen, but to say she looked incredibly sexy, that's another story. With a helmet on, and a cycling suit that really flattens every shape of your body; there’s not much left. It doesn’t mean you have to give in to it. Under Anna’s helmet was an amazing braid, Inge de Bruijn and Leontien van Moorsel celebrated femininity with well-polished nails and the hockey girls also get the most out of it with braids, ponytails and ingenious buns. So I immediately signed up for a gym membership and I'm now also in Olympic spirits. The idea that femininity is hard to find among athletes is a huge myth. Just dive into the television, and you’ll know better.

The bun

Buns seem like the easiest option, but it doesn’t have to be boring. You can give a bun a very easy twist by combining it with some better braiding. Just take a look here how to do that. And the positioning of your bun is also quite important. A high tight bun is perfect for a gymnast, but for other athletes it might be nicer to twist it a bit lower in the neck, because then it can’t go anywhere. A bun can actually always work, but it does depend a bit on the sport how you style it.

Braiding

So I now call this the Anna-braid. Under that top, the braid peeked through. And by making a good tight braid, it won’t sag, you have just something a bit nicer than a simple ponytail and all the ‘sweaty hairs‘ are immediately taken care of.

Hair accessories

I think this is just something that is desperately needed when exercising: hairbands and clips. Estavana Polman (you know, Rafael's girlfriend, but actually just the handball champion) is known for her ponytail with an iconic clip to keep the loose strands out of her face. And female hockey players often have those nice bands in their hair that give a ponytail more and more of an upgrade.

Ponytail with braid

This one has a bit of a Lara Croft vibe, but that’s not a bad thing at all. She is of course sexy and tough, so use this in your new look. Make a very tight high ponytail with a strong elastic. Then braid your ponytail and use a sturdy elastic at the end again. It really stays in place incredibly well and your look is extremely powerful.

Two buns

Edith Bosch has had her hair in all possible forms during competitions. Short and dyed blonde, red and long, dark and with bangs. But I do think that I found one of her more successful looks to be the two-bun variant. Now you might think Spice Girl, but I say incredibly street style worthy. It’s both super handy during sports and you can immediately hit the terrace afterwards, because this look has much more allure than just for the fitness mat.

The high ponytail

This is actually the look of all hockey girls. A high ponytail that moves so nicely back and forth as they sprint across the field. A well-done ponytail still stands strong even in wind force 10. And that is of course also the pace at which they sport.
