tinder, the numbers

“The average Tinder user spends 77 minutes a day on the app,” I read somewhere recently. Wait a minute, seventy-seven minutes? Seriously, HOW? That’s more than an hour a dày.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I really think that's a crazy number. Some further research showed that this number comes from 2014, but still. Tinder is not any less popular for it, so the number probably hasn't changed much since then. 77 minutes of swiping per day, it has almost become a part-time job.
Tinder is not my cup of tea. Happn a bit more, but I still find the apps quite silly. If you open Tinder now, there are very few attractive people to be found and on Happn the selection is slightly better, but it’s still not great. Nevertheless, it’s a nice way to pass the time; if you have Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter off, it’s quite fun to check out some people on Tinder or Happn. But 77 minutes is a bit much for me.
During that research round, I came across a site that focuses entirely on statistics and numbers and they had also analyzed Tinder. The numbers found have all been recently checked for accuracy, so we can say this is pretty much it. Hold on tight, it’s quite shocking. And remember it well, because throwing around nice numbers and interesting statistics is of course a great opening line for your next Tinder match.

Last February, Tinder had 50 million users worldwide.
But the app has been downloaded more than 100 million times in total.
Every day, there are 1.4 billion swipes.
And that results in 26 million matches daily.
Notably: only 54% of users are actually single.
And less notably: 79% of users are millennials.
Between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM there is a peak, and 9:00 PM is the best time to secure a match.
Look, this is fun: women swipe right 14% of the time...
And men, you wouldn't expect it: 46%.
And in total, there are 16,000 swipes given out every second (!).
Which results in 300 matches per second.

Tinder is active in 196 countries.
And each user logs in an average of 11 times a day on the app.
