THE 5 MISTAKES IN YOUR INTERIOR
In the past, I used to raid a lot of stores to give my bedroom a new look every week. I had cushions made of fur, candles in all the colors of the rainbow, and candlesticks that didn't even cost a euro, while I used to throw all my pocket money at them. In the meantime, I've learned a thing or two. I save until I can make really good interior investments, and to this day, I have no regrets about that. Believe me. You can enhance the space a bit with a nice coffee table book, an IKEA cabinet, and some accessories from HEMA, and you have a home where no mistake can be found. And a home that is quite VT-proof. Because you know all the mistakes listed below.
Clutter
It's incredibly tempting to completely empty stores with trinkets. At first, you naturally think you need all those items (I mention a candle, a cloche, a figurine, a breakfast plate, and who knows what else), but once they're in your interior, you get tired of them after a month, and it turns out to have been completely unnecessary. But throwing them away is not an option, because that would be a waste. And returning them is no longer possible. So the solution is to leave them there, and gradually a collecting frenzy creeps in that you dare not part with. What a shame.
Cushions and rugs
You have summer cushions and covers, you have winter variants, and you have items like throws that you absolutely need to turn your couch into a sofa that you never want to part with. And it's a bit sad to have just one cushion on the couch in a corner, so you replicate the IKEA styling corner. As much as possible so that it all looks incredibly cozy and snug. The only problem with that is that there’s no space left to sit. By the way, this tip works well if you're selling your house, because everyone wants to have the same couch including all the stuff on it right away.
Not saying goodbye
I've had that problem. That my boyfriend had furniture at home (some kind of designer TV cabinet and an amazing shoe cabinet that he found very practical but I thought was awful), but it was hard to say goodbye to. For him and for me. Because yes, it really is a shame to throw that away, it still looks brand new after all. Or it has emotional value (mother-in-law's chair or grandpa's antique cabinet) and you don't just sell that on Marktplaats. But still: do it. You make someone else very happy with it, and they will really give it a second life, and you can furnish your home the way you want.
Trend-sensitive
Anyway, the word trend already gives me the creeps, because when it comes to interior it, you should just do what you like. You will regret it a lot if you transform your entire interior because ‘purple with yellow dots and golden candlesticks’ is so nice, while you are actually very black/white. Then you won't feel so good about yourself when you're at home. Inspiration is perfectly fine, but keep it close to yourself. Then you will truly be the happiest.
Fake stuff
Invest in your interior. Now, you don't need to have a total designer house , but a good couch, table, and chairs are things you use every day. It's a shame if you skimp on those and have to make another investment after two months.
