THE TIPS FROM THE BEST
MAKE-UP ARTISTS ON EARTH
If there's one thing that goes wrong the fastest and the best in a make-up look, it's the foundation. Where we used to completely plaster ourselves with the thickest and darkest foundation, we now love it ultra-thin. Ha, at least we've made some progress. But, we can still learn a lot more. Much more. So that's why we asked the best make-up artists on earth for advice and compiled their tips and tricks.
Start with a cotton swab
“Use a cotton swab to clean up any leftover day cream or eye cream around your eyes and mouth. Then your foundation will really adhere much better and stay on all day.”
Troy Jensen
Make it a bit lighter
“If you mix your foundation with moisturizer, that's a very easy way to lighten the color and reduce the coverage. It all looks a lot more natural.”
Caitlin Wooters
Glow in the dark
“If you want a really beautiful glowing effect, you can mix your foundation a bit with gold or pearl white eyeshadow. That gives an even more radiant look. And that's what you want.”
Nicolas Degennes, creative director of Givenchy Beauty
Mix it thicker
“If you want to make your foundation a bit thicker, mix it with a bit of loose powder. Just make sure you don't add too much, because then it immediately becomes a plaster filler.”
Cecilia Muench, creative director of Inglot
The right color
“Foundation and concealer are very difficult products. Especially when it comes to color. The colors need to match the inside of your arm and not the side of your hand. Then you can be sure that the color matches your skin well. Or you can naturally test it on your jawline.‘
Maggie Ford Danielson, Benefit Global Beauty Authority
Brushes
“Foundation with your hands? No, no. Use a foundation brush and hold it all the way at the end of the brush. You have less control, but it gives a very soft effect and thus a very natural finish.‘
Amount
“Too much foundation is never good. You need to build it up gradually. Use one pump of liquid foundation for light coverage and two pumps to really cover everything well.”
Dark foundation
Made a wrong purchase? “Apply a dark color just under your cheekbone and blend it out. Then you use the color to contour and it will still come in handy.”
Wim Thompson, make-up artist Dior
