WHY MAY WANTS A DRINK CABINET

(And heading straight towards Jellinek)

It all started in New York. At the bar of hotel NoMo SoHo to be precise (because it's a nice place to be), where my beloved and I ordered two gin tonics. And then another two, but for the story, that doesn't really matter. Those gin tonics were exuberantly and elaborately shaken together. Bottles were thrown in the air, there was shaking, juggling, and alcohol was sprayed freely all around. But above all, the result of all that shaking was poured into glasses. Wonderful glasses. Do you remember those old-fashioned whiskey glasses that stood in a walnut wood drink cabinet? Exactly those, but the 2016 version.

Then I had to have those glasses. So I knocked on Renske's door, because she is into interiors (check!) and drinks (check!), so she knows where I need to be. A week later, I dined at &samhoud places. Amazing food, fourteen courses without hearing a single plop, but especially those glasses. Where the chef had bought them was the question. Somewhere at a vintage shop in the city, was the answer. Good. She didn't want to say where they came from. That only made my desire grow.

”I also need a drink cabinet. And a double-walled ice bucket that I can fill around cocktail time with one of those awkward but bartender-like tongs.”

I still don't have the glasses (tips, anyone?), but my dream has grown bigger. I also need a drink cabinet. And a double-walled ice bucket that I can fill around cocktail time with one of those awkward but bartender-like tongs. And then I want, of course, a little plate with some fresh slices of lemon and lime. And straws! Festive straws. And rosemary, dried flowers, cloves, basil, and the whole damn bunch.

And not just one type of gin, no, both Hendrick’s and Tanqueray and Monkey 47 and of course the one from Jonnie and Thérèse Boer. And for when Renske comes (whiskey is incredibly #goals 2016), of course, a small selection of Scottish whiskey. Her favorites: Laphroaig (at least ten years old), Bowmore, Oban, and Talisker. For Jet a Sambuca from Molinari and for Kiki a nice, strong 43. By the way, we all love a glass of limoncello. With matching glasses that I have specially made thoroughly cold in the freezer.
