Why you look 7 years older in selfies
AND FIVE TIPS TO PREVENT THAT
Is there anywhere a post online about the perfect Instagram account, the best filters and the most fun people to follow, then I click on it. Instagram has gradually taken over my life and yes, I am quite involved. Why I almost never post selfies? Because I always look absolutely terrible in them. When this post appeared on Grazia Daily about why you always look 7 years older in selfies, it felt like it was written just for me. But hey, you can probably learn something from it too. Nobody wants to look like a granny.
1. Light
Seems like a logical point. Good lighting is important. Bad lighting can emphasize your wrinkles even more, make your bags under the eyes bigger, and intensify shadows.
2. The right angle
How you hold your phone, in what lighting, and the shape of the lens are quite important points. A phone with a 28-millimeter lens does exactly what you say and what you are. But hey, not everyone has a phone with a 28-millimeter lens and to be honest, I have no clue if my phone, a perfectly normal iPhone, has a 28-millimeter lens. Alright. The important thing is to hold your camera a little lower, so not in the air, which makes your forehead look smaller. The higher the camera, the bigger your forehead and the older you look. Okay, I’m going back to the pony because this isn’t getting anywhere.
3. Don’t look down too much
Keep your camera a bit straight in front of you. If you look down too much, it makes the skin around your neck a bit bumpy and it all looks a bit saggy. You might have been working hard on contouring, but that doesn’t matter anymore.
4. Everything hangs and sags
As you get older, the volume in different places on your face decreases. Places where you actually don’t want it, like around your mouth and cheeks. This makes your face look a bit ‘empty’. The volume goes to places where you actually don’t want it, like your nose. An iPhone lens only emphasizes that. So make sure to turn your head a bit.
5. Hello selfie stick
Some people curse the selfie stick, but actually, it’s just the best. It helps to avoid an unflattering angle and actually makes your face look a bit more refined. Not too bad. In fact; long live the selfie stick.
