The box office hits of the past year

I wonder why I don't have a Pathé pass anymore these days, with which you can go to the cinema as often as you want for about 19 euros a month. I can easily get that out of it. And I think I also eat my own body weight annually. popcorn (always salty, never sweet). A s always, a trip to the cinema was again a popular activity, and the figures have also been released on which films we have flocked to.

Film1 conducted research, and in first place is the film that gets to take all the honors this year: Blade Runner 2049, the blockbuster with Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and our own Dutch Sylvia Hoeks. A crowd favorite, therefore, and the sequel to all the old Blade Runner science fiction films from the past. The film received praise for the combination of the fantastic cast, the decor, the music, and of course the intriguing storyline.

And then on to numbers two and three on the list. In second place, we find the film Baby Driver. I happened to see it not too long ago and must honestly say that I personally didn't quite understand it. Music-wise fantastic, but further not really my thing. Baby Driver by Edgar Wright is loved for, among other things, the music, the rhythm, the style, the cast, and the action.

In third place is a thriller that has been a (justified) hype over the past year: Get Out. The thriller sharply highlights racial differences in America as Film1 has described, and also in a creative way through a frightening atmosphere. Missed it in the cinema by chance? Then check this out.

For all the Star Wars fans among us: yes, the latest series of the film has also made it to the top five, and you can find it in fourth place (quite an achievement for a film that has just been released in the cinema), so that shows that the science fiction genre is hugely popular in the Netherlands.

I'll quickly give you an overview of the top ten of the past year in the Netherlands:

  1. Phantom Thread
  2. Baby Driver
  3. Get Out
  4. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  5. Logan
  6. Dunkirk
  7. It – good for your relationship, remember?
