The Megxit Files: an update on the royals

It has been, to put it mildly, a turbulent weekend for the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace. On Thursday, Harry and Meghan announced in a joint statement that they were stepping back from their role as senior members of the family, and as expected, all hell broke loose afterwards. Or the rumor mill. Because the Queen herself supposedly knew nothing of this decision and, like the rest of the world, found out about it via the TV.  Whether that is really true we will probably never know, as the Queen is not known for ever responding to juicy rumors.

What is certain is that there is a crisis meeting scheduled for today. This is being held at the royal estate Sandringham, where Queen Elizabeth is currently on vacation. I guess she has had a more relaxing getaway than this... Prince Charles is present, Prince William too, and Harry himself will join. Meghan has already traveled back to Canada to be with son Archie. Or is it a last-minute flight attempt from this crisis meeting? Not a successful one in any case, as she is present by phone.

What will be discussed here? Mainly what the role of Harry and Meghan will be now that they have stepped back. Queen Elizabeth wanted to have a ‘deal’ on this within 72 hours, but according to British newspapers, that deal is not in the works yet: that 72 was already mentioned on Friday and well, it is now Monday and they haven't even sat down at the table. The queen also wants to know how Meghan and Harry will make their money, as they have stated they want to be financially independent.

Well, the first step towards that financial independence seems to have already been taken: Meghan is said to have made a deal with Disney to work as a voice-over. All nice and good of course, but that deal seems to have been made (and Meghan is said to have already recorded her first voice-over texts) even before they officially stepped back from their role. And that does not sit well with the British public.

And in the meantime, Meghan — as expected — is being completely roasted in the British tabloids. It's somewhat understandable that you would flee to another continent. Is Meghan's image even recoverable in England? Harry and Meghan are reportedly threatening with an interview with Oprah again, so the Queen is probably thinking twice before she does anything. I am very curious, but this is definitely to be continued.
