12x What you didn't know about the Met Gala

Anna Wintour MET Gala 2022

Yesterday it finally happened: the event of the year. Everyone in Hollywood who matters was in New York for the Met Gala. And also people who don't really matter, by the way, because this Fredrik Robertsson was recognized by exactly no one and posted on various sites as Jared Leto. Oh dear.

But behind all the glamour, of course, a lot happens behind the scenes that you want to know, so here it is: the most fun facts about the Met Gala.

1. Tickets for the event start at $30,000 per person — the most expensive are $50,000 for one ticket. To reserve a full table, you need to pay between $275,000 and $500,000. So a little saving is still needed. By the way, you still have to pay this amount even if you have an invitation.

2. But a superstar doesn't have to pay that, of course: each designer can bring one ‘muse’ whom he/she dresses as a showpiece, and this celebrity can enter completely free of charge. So, if there's still a designer looking for a muse: I'm totally available, you know. Had no plans yesterday.

3. What is actually the purpose of the Met Gala, besides the fact that everyone just wants to go? Well, it's a benefit evening for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Benefit. More specifically: the fashion department of the museum.

4. And what about those themes? They are determined by giving a kind of homage to the past of certain fashion eras, and the upcoming exhibitions are also taken into account. This year the theme is Gilded Glamour, which refers to the Gilded Age in New York (from 1870 to 1900). Although I must honestly say that the celebs have been adhering less and less to the theme over the years.

5. Case in point: Katy Perry once showed up as a cheeseburger and another time as a candlestick. As far as I'm concerned, that has very little to do with fashion.

6. Paris Hilton and her sister Nicky really wanted to go to the Met Gala for years, but they couldn't manage to score an invitation. So they have never been there. The same was true for the Kardashians and Nicole Richie, but they eventually succeeded. In fact, this is the first year that all the Kardashians were present.

7. Smoking is prohibited at the gala, but every year the smoking-addicted celebs manage to break this rule again (often in the bathroom).

8. Taking photos is also prohibited, but — you guessed it — this is also broken almost every year again.. The reason for this is that they want all A-listers to have a night off from the paparazzi.

9. All guests are greeted at the top of the stairs by Anna Wintour, the face of the Met Gala. There's a fast pace to it, as each guest only gets twenty seconds for this moment.

10. Interestingly, a number of A-listers have never made it onto the invitation list: Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Adele, and Britney Spears have never walked the red carpet here.

11. The celebs enjoy an exhibition inside and then a dinner. For this dinner, a seating arrangement is made where one rule is always applied: partners may not sit next to each other.

12. And during this dinner, certain ingredients are avoided: chives, garlic, onions, and parsley will not be found because they get stuck between the teeth and your breath smells from them. Fish is also avoided due to the smell.
