The funniest reactions to Will Smith's Slap

Will Smith en zijn vrouw

For years, the Oscars have been struggling with increasingly disappointing numbers. The show was said to be too boring, the nominees far too white, and the winners unjust. Well, last night was (especially when you consider it in hindsight) a massive ratings hit, but probably not quite in the way they had hoped. Will Smith stormed the stage after host Chris Rock made a joke about his wife Jada, which did not go down well.

He joked that he ‘couldn't wait to see Jada in G.I. Joe 2’. Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from the autoimmune disease alopecia, which causes all her hair to fall out. In the past, she has spoken openly about it multiple times, as well as about her insecurities and struggles that come with it. So, the fact that the joke was not really of high caliber is, in my opinion, beyond doubt.

In the video, Will Smith initially seems to laugh at the joke, while Jada immediately rolls her eyes and looks not very amused. And Will also seems to not really appreciate it afterward. He walks onto the stage to slap Chris Rock in the face. He then storms off the stage and shouts from his seat: ‘Keep my wife’s name out your f*cking mouth‘. Clear language.

A bit of a shame for Will is that this is the moment we will remember from that evening and not the moment when he finally, for the first time in his career, managed to win an Oscar. When he came back on stage for the second time — this time planned — everyone was, of course, on the edge of their seats; would he apologize? Well, his speech lasted quite a while, but no: an apology was not included. He did say that he hoped (with tears streaming down his face) that the Academy would invite him again next year. Backstage, Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper, and Terry Crews were seen trying to calm and comfort him.

That violence is never a good response to a bad joke, the internet certainly knows how to handle that. So voilà, to start your Monday off nicely: the funniest memes about Will's Slap. Chris Rock has not publicly responded yet, but behind the scenes, he said: ‘That’s the only time you get hit by Muhammed Ali and it doesn’t leave a scratch’, referring to the time Smith took on the role of the boxer. Honestly: he seems to take it lightly.
