What is wrong with Maan?

By

Maan, the most fun musical girl in the country, has been out of the picture for a while. That can happen: making new music, reflecting on what was, sniffing in the neck of your sweetheart, getting some fresh air. But when Maan was not in the line-up of Vrienden van Amstel Live, eyebrows were raised. Maan and the Vrienden van Amstel, that’s like honey with your freshly ordered mint tea; a near certainty that makes life just a little bit more pleasant.

Concerned journalists called her management with a book excuse. What turned out? Maan is fully booked for the entire coming year, in other words, sold out. The management immediately tried to extinguish any rising flames by ruling out issues like burnouts. Maan would like time for new music. Of course, the speculation machine is running at full speed. Has she fallen for the dangers of the artist's life? Is her boyfriend not the right choice after all?

The whole world is worried. Because Maan was always everywhere. Always bouncing across the stage, always full of life times a thousand, and now suddenly the handbrake has been pulled very hard. I truly understand those thoughts. I know Maan a bit and have always admired how she managed to stand so solidly in the centrifuge she dove into right after her graduation. Not only could she sing exceptionally well, she was a born artist who mastered all the tricks of the trade (photoshoots, interviews, making music herself, performing) to four decimal places. Just as she accelerated from 0 to 100, she has now come to a very sudden stop.

Still, I can imagine that after all those years she wants to take a breather, maybe look back, recharge, just to prevent everything from getting out of hand. Let’s park all the doomsday scenarios for peace's sake and assume that Maan is acting wisely. After all, she has always done so, so let’s please give her the benefit of the doubt. And grant her some rest, that too. In the meantime, she has written enough beautiful songs to keep us sweet for the coming year.
