Can you still go on vacation to Croatia this summer?

By
Kunnen we nog wel op vakantie naar Kroatië?

Ah, Croatia. That azure blue water, those endless beaches, the smell of sunscreen and wood-fired pizza – and yes, this summer back on the radar of every high school graduate with a diploma and a group chat full of travel-hungry friends. Especially Split, these are the hotspots in Split by the way) is hotter than hot. But... is it literally too hot there? And we don't mean from the parties, but from something less festive: wildfires. Because they are indeed there. And this year quite a lot.

What's going on in Croatia?

Croatia is on high alert these weeks, as the wildfire season has begun. Normally, it lasts from mid-June to the end of August, but this year it is notably intense. Just between June 2024 and June 2025, 53 official fire warnings have been issued – and that is seriously much more than in previous years.

Near the popular Omis, nearly a hundred people had to be evacuated last week. Tourists too, yes. And although fortunately there were no casualties, it is quite a reality check. That vacation selfie in your white beach dress looks just a bit less relaxed when a fire helicopter zooms by in the background.

Should we now cancel en masse?

No way. You really don't have to tear up your interrail pass or hang that crop top outfit back up. Most fires occur in nature reserves and are quickly brought under control. Croatia is prepared every year with firefighting planes, emergency services, and warning systems. But it is handy to be a bit more alert than usual.

Do you have asthma or are you sensitive to smoke? Then prefer to stay in or around the city, instead of a cabin in the woods. And always check the updates from the Croatian civil protection before you leave (and no, that's not boring – that's smart).

Why is Split this summer the hotspot?

Split is the golden girl of the Adriatic coast. Think: old city walls, alleys full of photogenic squares, terraces where the Aperol Spritz (with with these tips you make the tastiest Aperol) keeps coming all day long and ferries to islands where you can show off a different bikini every day. No wonder it is the place for a break after months of stress among students, young professionals, and graduates.

And good news: the fire risks in Split itself are very low. The city is by the sea, is easily accessible, has a safe infrastructure, and there are plenty of beaches where you – with a bit of luck – can just relax without panic.

Tips for a carefree Croatia holiday

  • Book flexibly: make sure your accommodation can shift a bit if really necessary.
  • Download a local alert app: this way you immediately know if there is a fire risk in your area.
  • Go with the flow: plan alternatives. Is that one beach closed? Then just take the boat to an island. It's that simple.
  • Make sure you have good travel insurance: (including evacuation if necessary – just in case).
  • Stay realistic: you are still in a beautiful country. One fire really doesn't ruin your entire summer.

So...

Can you still go to Croatia? Yes. Do you have to pay a bit more attention than other years? Yes too. But with a bit of preparation and common sense, this country is still one of the most beautiful places to meet your summer love, drink your first rosé as a graduate, or just clear your head with a view of the sea.
