Mel Schilling: everything you want to know about this mega beloved MAFS expert

By
Mel Schilling, known as an expert of Married at First Sight, smiles sideways during an interview. She wears a blue top and striking silver earrings against a dark background.

I have rarely been so incredibly fond of someone on TV as I was of Mel. Okay, she was of course also regularly in my living room during my guilty pleasures: MAFS Australia and MAFS UK. But still. I genuinely loved Mel. The news that she had passed away (March 2026) hit me hard.

Mel didn't know me, but I felt like I knew her. Authentic, warm, smart, and so calm amidst all the reality drama, Mel Schilling (Melanie Jane Schilling) has rightly grown to become one of the most beloved faces of Married at First Sight over the past few years. Because amidst all the chaos, arguments, and accusations, Mel always remained so calm, sweet, empathetic, and sharp at the same time.

But who was Mel Schilling actually?

She didn't start on television

Before Mel became globally known as a relationship expert, she worked for years as a coach and behavioral expert. Relationships and human behavior fascinated her from an early age, and that knowledge was clearly reflected on television. She really looked beyond all those superficial arguments and often knew exactly how to pinpoint the sore spot.

But what genuinely set her apart from many television experts was her kind, calm, and warm approach. She didn't judge but really tried to understand why people do what they do.

She found love online herself

Perhaps amusing for a relationship expert, but Mel met her own husband through a dating site. She was always notably open about it. In 2011, she met Gareth Brisbane through the dating site eHarmony. He was living in Adelaide at the time, and Mel was in Melbourne.

A few years later, they married in Bali and had a daughter together, Maddie. Mel often spoke lovingly about how important her family was to her and how motherhood truly changed her life.

For years, the face of MAFS

Many MAFS fans think that Mel has been involved with Married at First Sight Australia from day one, but she joined a little later. From 2017, season four, she appeared for the first time on the show and then grew to become one of the most popular experts of the program.

Mel really brought something new to MAFS, her psychological knowledge combined with her beautiful warm, empathetic, and honest character. Reality TV often revolves solely around sensation, but with Mel (and John) on the couch, they remained calm and human. Frankly, that was also needed in a montage of arguing couples and sometimes complete chaos.

Later, she also became hugely popular in the United Kingdom, as since 2021 she was also seen as an expert on Married at First Sight UK. MAFS UK then became completely renewed and received the same format as the Australian version.

She mostly lived in England

Although Mel originally came from Australia, she moved to the United Kingdom for her work. Especially due to the enormous success of Married at First Sight UK she became incredibly popular there and consequently received more and more TV work, media appearances, and projects in England. Additionally, Gareth naturally had British/Irish roots, making a life in London feel logical for their family.

Mel and Gareth first lived together in Australia and also had their daughter Maddie there. Only later, when Maddie was five or six, did they move to England in 2021 due to her career with Married at First Sight UK. First to Brighton and later to London.

Online, I read that London really suited her well. She loved television, media, people, conversations, events, and new challenges. In interviews, I read that she dared to take on all new chapters. That made Mel so inspiring: becoming a mother later, becoming famous later, and breaking through internationally later.

Her openness about cancer touched many people

One of the most personal and painful moments of her life, Mel shared with her followers at the end of 2023: her diagnosis of colon cancer. During the filming of MAFS Australia, she suddenly experienced severe abdominal pain, and ultimately a tumor was found.

She then shared it in her own Mel-like calm and open manner with the world. Not dramatic or heavy at all, but rather so honest, hopeful, and powerful.

Online, an incredible number of supportive messages from fans appeared, praising her for her strength, positivity, and the fact that she continued to draw attention to the importance of preventive screenings.

Why everyone loves her so much

Perhaps it is ultimately very simple: Mel was just incredibly sweet, beautiful, fun, and she always had the most perfect advice. From that famous couch, she brought so much calm, warmth, and respect. She always spoke empathetically but was also clear and wonderfully straightforward.

Mel, what an incredible void you leave behind. We are going to miss you so much.
