10 SECRETS

about Kim Kardashian's beauty look

Last week we revealed the hair secrets of Kim and this time it's the honor of makeup artist Mario Dedivanovic to share all the makeup tricks. He was responsible for the change in hashtags from #WokeUpLikeThis to #ThisTakesFourHours (seriously!) and shares his best tips, tricks, and products. Make sure to take a day off tomorrow, because it all takes a while before you master it yourself. But hey, we didn't expect anything less from a Kardashian look did we?

First makeup, then hair

“If clients get their hair done first, then hairspray gets on the face and that's not very handy. Also, it's not very handy if you want a big, bouncy blow-out because then you have to pin it back again when it's makeup time.”

Use moisturizer instead of primer

Dedivanovic recommends skipping the primer. “You use a nice, soft cream and apply it to your face, neck, and chest. It helps the foundation blend beautifully. I’m not a fan of primer and therefore don’t use it, because I don’t like to create a barrier between skin and makeup.”

Use foundation everywhere

“You probably blend your foundation beautifully over your forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks, but don’t forget your eyelids, ears, chest, arms, legs, and feet. Seriously, for a red carpet event, I always work from head to toe to ensure that the skin tone of Kardashian is the same everywhere. It's fine if you skip it once, but don’t forget your ears. It would be a shame if they are red in the photos.”

Use a steady hand

“Always use the same hand with which you do your makeup. First, do the eyebrows, then the eyeliner, and then set everything with powder. All with the same hand. This gives you better balance and also ensures that your foundation doesn’t get smudged because you suddenly make a wrong move.”

Ombre effect on your eyebrows

Dedivanovic really takes all the time for the perfect eyebrows. His secret is to create a sort of ombre effect. “If you make the outside a bit darker and the inside a bit lighter, the eyebrows look softer. So a less harsh and strict effect.”

First creams, then powders

Just like with the face, Dedivanovic skips the primer for the eyes and lets different eyeshadows do the work. “First use cream eyeshadows and then powder, because cream makes everything look more intense, thick, and rich, and powder keeps the pigment in place all day.”

Use a triple line

“If you only have one eyeliner in your bag, then you’re really doing something wrong. I usually use about three or four different layers of eyeliner to really get the deepest effect. One can lift the eyes a bit more, another gives a perfect finish, and a third provides the perfect point in the corners of the eyes. It gives your eyes much more definition and makes the look appear much richer.”

Bake away dark circles

Yes, here it is. The baking technique. I already explained it to you a few weeks ago, because it gets rid of dark circles and makes the skin much more even.

Build the lashes

“Lashes are incredibly important. They don’t even have to look extremely fake, as long as you build them up well. Start really at the roots and zigzag the lashes very well. This way, you get perfectly separated hairs and that gives much more volume. If you want to make it really dramatic, then add some extremely long hairs in the corners. The longest in the corners. Once everything is dry, add a coat of mascara on top and you’re done.”

Contouring and highlighting

“Here I really go all out. With a good brush and bronzer, I create dark lines and with a highlighter, I lighten certain points. I do this quite extremely, because it creates good shadows and depth in the face. I also use different types of highlighters to sometimes make it a bit warmer and sometimes extremely shiny.”
