amayzine speaks DOUTZEN
Well, you can hardly have missed it because I've been shouting it from the rooftops: last Saturday I got to interview Doutzen Kroes. As you know, Doutzen is the face of Samsung and this weekend the new S6 was presented in Paris, with pretty much the entire famous fashion week as witnesses. Before that spectacle, which I have already told you about here, I got to sit across from Doutzen to ask her some questions. And this is how it went.
The whole event took place at Hotel George V and that is one of the most beautiful and expensive hotels in the city. When I arrive, there is already a thick line of fans on the street (for me, of course, that should be clear) and in the lobby, it's a constant flow of richly dressed women walking behind a garçon carrying their shopping bags. With the jitters in my legs, I wait for someone to come pick me up. I am wide-eyed here, the lobby, the inner garden, the hotel bar where fascinating types softly murmur about their expensive drinks and snacks – really, I could look around for hours.
“I’ve had that too, I see someone walking and want to approach them to say hello until I realize that we don’t actually know each other in real life.”
But I'm here for Doutzen. She is sitting in a lovely room, together with agent Sarah Keller and Mo Karadag, the holy trinity. Doutzen is tall, thin, so refined and so subtle, as I mentioned, I feel like a lovesick schoolgirl. We sit down at the table and Mo runs his hands through her hair again, which looks even more beautiful than before. We naturally follow her closely on Instagram, so now that she is sitting next to me, she almost feels like a friend, something she also experiences sometimes. “I’ve had that too, I see someone walking and want to approach them to say hello until I realize that we don’t actually know each other in real life.”
Is your phone and you really fused together?
“Yes, but I do have a bit of a love-hate relationship with my phone. I can’t live without it and I’m very grateful that you can reach people so easily, but I notice that it often sits in my hand constantly. Even when you’re dining or going out, it’s always lying next to you. I try to put it away sometimes when I’m with the kids, but yes, when you try to take a photo, you want it again.‘
You share a lot on social media. Where is the line? What do you keep to yourself and what not?
“I find that a bit difficult sometimes, yes. I try to find a balance between work and private life. In the beginning, Sunnery and I decided that we wouldn’t share anything personal at all, but sometimes you’re so proud, you want to share it. And I also think that fans appreciate it, that they get a little insight into our private life.”
Why is it so important for models to be active on social media nowadays?
“It’s especially very important for most companies, every client asks for it. In every contract I have, there is a separate section about social media, that I do certain updates about the product, for example, but they also look at how popular you are. And that is very important for them, logically. And I have to keep in mind what I post. If I want to post something on Instagram, I have a number of people in my head that I go through, my mother, agent, accountant, clients – everyone has to like it. And if someone could be hurt by that photo, then I won’t post it.”
And honestly, how often do you check your Instagram?
“Very differently. When I’m working a lot, I spend a long time in hair and makeup and then I get bored sometimes and then I’m on Instagram a lot. And of course, when I just posted something. But there are also days when I don’t check it all day.”
Which photo received the most likes?
“I think my pregnancy photo. I think I really got about 200,000 likes.”
Who do you enjoy following the most?
“My colleagues actually, other models, to see what they are doing. My sister of course, but also Rihanna, she is provocatively fun and I like that too. She does things I would never dare to do.”
Tell me, you know this. How do you make the best selfie?
“Well, I think there are girls who are much better at it than I am haha. But I think from above, that’s the best angle for my face. By the way, what’s fun is that the new Samsung S6 has a special selfie button. It has a button on the back so taking a selfie is super easy and never fails.”
You are of course away from home a lot and then your phone is perfect for keeping in touch with home. I’m so curious, do you have a lot of group chats?
“Yes, lately I do that. For example, I have a group with Sunnery and my mother-in-law, and with friends too. It’s so nice to be so updated on what everyone is doing.”
And finally, can you tell me what the last message you received was?
“I think that was with Sarah [Doutzen’s agent, ed.] that I had landed in Paris. And from Sunnery one that everything was fine with the kids. Those are of course the best messages.”
