Sterling Point: cast, story and season 2

Movies & series › Titles, cast & explanation

A seventeen-year-old New Yorker inherits an island from a grandfather she has never met, and that's just the beginning of the problems. Sterling Point seems like a standard YA summer series on paper, but it manages to hold that impression for exactly one episode. Eight episodes, one weekend, and then you're standing with your phone in hand googling whether there will be a season 2. We've looked into it for you.

What is Sterling Point about?

Annie Jacobson (Ella Rubin) is seventeen, lives in New York, and is quite a type A. She loves to plan. She knows exactly what she wants to do with her future, and her summer was already fully mapped out. Then she gets rejected for a prestigious business program, and there goes the schedule. On top of that, she hears that her estranged grandfather has passed away. She never met the man, but he left her and her twin brother Connor something quite significant: an island in Canada. A whole island. Not a room, not a shed.

That raises questions. Why would an unknown grandfather leave something like that to his grandchildren? And why does their father want to tell so little about him and about the past of their deceased mother? Annie doesn't trust it and decides to investigate herself. Without telling her father where she is really going, she sets off for Sterling Point.

The island: Muskoka, without reception

The island is located in the Canadian Muskoka region and looks like the place where you would want to spend the whole summer yourself. Wooden cabins by the water, long docks, boats, and evenings where everyone sits outside together. No one is in a hurry. And because there is hardly any reception, no one is glued to their phone all day. A dream, although that dream disappears as soon as the family secrets come to light.

Want to know how real that environment is? According to our travel article, Muskoka has more than 1600 lakes, dense forests, pink granite rocks, and small towns that could come straight out of a romantic movie or Sterling Point. You can find that in The cottage from Heated Rivalry can really be visited in Canada, where we take a closer look at the region.

Who are the characters and who plays them?

Annie meets a group of young people on the island with whom she spends the summer, and with whom she finally becomes a bit more relaxed. These are the names you need to know. The cast comes from our articles about the series.

CharacterPlayed byWho is it?
Annie JacobsonElla RubinThe main character. Seventeen, ambitious, from New York. Stays on the island at the end of season 1.
RamonaAmélie HoeferleTurns out to play a much bigger role in the lives of Annie and Connor than they ever thought. Leaves for New York at the end.
ConnorKeen RuffaloAnnie's twin brother. Also searching for the truth about their family.
EllisJacob Whiteduck-LavoieA hardworking boy who lives on the island.
RoryDaniel Quinn-ToyeA wealthy New Yorker who comes to Sterling Point in the summer.
OonaBo BragasonThe flirty one of the group.

You can already feel the storm brewing: both Ellis and Rory find Annie interesting. One comes from the island, the other from the same wealthy New York world as she does. So yes, the Team Ellis and Team Rory discussions can officially begin. But Sterling Point is more than a love story à la The Summer I Turned Pretty. Annie discovers that her family history is more complicated than she thought. Together with Connor, she tries to find out what secrets their father and the previous generation always kept hidden. So maybe this is just a sister drama with a love triangle as a side dish.

Why is everyone talking about Sterling Point?

Our reviewer started it, like with every series that TikTok claims will change your life, with healthy skepticism. One episode couldn't hurt. Two neither. Before the reviewer knew it, it was the middle of the night and they were becoming emotionally involved in the love problems and family secrets of a group of fictional teenagers on a Canadian island. That's how it goes. Read the full reaction in Everyone is obsessed with the series Sterling Point.

Teenagers who sound like teenagers

The biggest compliment we can give the series: the characters don't feel like adults who just happen to be placed in high school. They talk, dress, and behave like young people. They make jokes about attachment styles, wear jorts, bandanas, and silver rings, and try to figure out who they are and who they fall for. Their sexuality is also not automatically a big and heavy problem. It just exists.

You probably know those series where a writer tries very hard to show that Gen Z language is understood, and every character shouts ‘slay’ or ‘it's giving’ every three lines. That doesn't happen here. You don't get the feeling that actors are neatly waiting for their perfect one-liner. It feels more like you've secretly joined a real friend group.

Warmth instead of Euphoria

Where series like Euphoria as the past few years have become darker, more intense, and more violent, Sterling Point opts for warmth. The characters have real problems, but you aren't constantly on edge waiting for something terrible to happen to someone. Phones hardly play a role. Instead of endless text conversations, the characters look at each other, talk on a boat, and fall in love during real conversations. Add a beautiful island, a delightful family secret, and a love triangle, and you have the perfect series to binge in one weekend.

‘instagrammable

That it's not a shaker full of standard clichés probably has a lot to do with creator Megan Park, who previously My Old Ass and The Fallout made. The creators of Gossip Girl worked as executive producers. The ingredients are familiar: family secrets, summer loves, unrequited feelings, attractive people, and parents who are notably often absent. The difference lies in the execution.

Our opinion: is Sterling Point worth it?

Yes. We would even go a step further: this could very well be a cult series in the making. One of those where we will still be watching edits in a few years, and where people seriously tell which character they are rooting for. Are you already getting flashbacks to Team Edward and Team Jacob? Then you're in the right place.

  • What works: believably written teenagers, a warm tone, a beautiful location, and a family secret that keeps pulling you in.
  • For whom: viewers who love YA romance and summer series and after The Summer I Turned Pretty still have a hole in their hearts.
  • Viewing pace: eight episodes, all available at once on Prime Video. So plan your weekend.
  • Warning: once you arrive at Sterling Point, you won't want to leave for a while.

Komt er een seizoen 2 van Sterling Point?

The short answer: not officially yet. Prime Video has not announced a second season, so there is no release date and no confirmed return of the cast. Still, there is reason for hope, and you can read about it in detail in Sterling Point season 2: is there a sequel to the Prime Video hit?. These are the main points.

  • The numbers: since its premiere on August 5, Sterling Point quickly grew to become one of the most talked-about new series of the summer. The series topped the global Prime Video charts shortly after its release. A successful first week does not automatically mean a renewal, we have to be honest about that.
  • The creator: Megan Park sees much more in the world and the characters. She told Entertainment Weekly that season 1 was mainly about establishing the world, and that a second season would allow for a deeper dive into the characters. She also spoke extensively about Annie and Ramona in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
  • The end: season 1 ends with several major cliffhangers (see below).
  • When then? A release in 2027 is not unthinkable if Prime Video gives the green light quickly, but a date is purely speculation at this point.

What happens at the end of season 1? (spoilers)

Note: from here on, you will read spoilers. If you haven't seen everything yet, skip this part.

The biggest secret revolves around Ramona. Annie and Connor start their summer under the assumption that their family history is fairly straightforward. Then it turns out Ramona plays a much more important role: Annie, Connor, and Ramona are half-siblings. The family secrets become more complicated than they seemed.

  • Annie decides to stay at Sterling Point.
  • Ramona leaves for New York to live with her biological father. The lives of the two sisters are thus turned upside down: Ramona always lived on the island, while Annie and Connor grew up in New York.
  • Connor receives a message from an adoption agency about his biological mother. He doesn't tell Annie right away.
  • Annie remains single and the love triangle with Ellis and Rory remains unresolved.

What could season 2 be about?

Megan Park has already mentioned several ideas. She talks about the reversed lives of Annie and Ramona, the future of the island, the family history, and Connor's search for his biological mother. The background of the parents also comes up. And she has indicated that she would like to continue with Annie and Ellis. So it doesn't feel like a story needs to be invented. The story is already there.

Which cast members are returning?

Since Prime Video has not yet announced season 2, there is no official cast list. We expect Ella Rubin (Annie), Amélie Hoeferle (Ramona), Keen Ruffalo (Connor), Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie (Ellis), Daniel Quinn-Toye (Rory), and Bo Bragason (Oona).
