Thirty singles, a wall in between, and a proposal before they have ever met. Love is Blind: Netherlands has been on Netflix since September 30, presented by Nicolette van Dam and Bas Smit. What is Love is Blind: Netherlands about?

The premise is as simple as it is daring: dating without seeing each other. It's more than a blind date with a wink, because there is a big question hanging over it. Can you fall in love with someone whose voice you only know? And does that love hold up once you actually see the person?

For the Dutch version, thirty singles entered the pods. These are rooms separated by a thin wall. You can hear each other, but you can't see each other. No swiping, no profile pictures, and no first impression based on appearance. The singles must rely entirely on their conversations and the connection that arises from them.

We find this a refreshing premise in a time when a date often starts with a scrolling session through photos. Here, there is nothing to look at, so there is also nothing to hide behind. That is immediately the exciting part: only what someone says and how someone says it remains.

How does Love is Blind work? From pod to yes

The program has a fixed route, and that route is exactly why you, as a viewer, stay engaged. This is the order:

• The pods: the singles talk to each other through the wall. Only voices, only conversations.
• The proposal: if the connection is strong enough, a proposal can even follow before the two have ever seen each other.
• The first meeting: only after the proposal can they see each other for the first time.
• The real test: traveling together, living together, and planning the wedding.
• The decision: ultimately, the couples must decide if they really want to marry each other.

The beauty of this format is that it brings together two worlds that normally do not go together. On one side, the ultimate romantic fantasy: someone chooses you for who you are. On the other side, the gray everyday life, with a shared bathroom and a wedding budget. Does the emotional connection survive? That is exactly the question the program poses.

Netflix releases the season in blocks. This means you have to wait a bit between the first episodes and the wedding, which is great for the suspense.

The thirty participants of Love is Blind: Netherlands

Fifteen women and fifteen men are participating, aged between 26 and 34. The group is diverse in terms of work and background: from lawyer and nurse to DJ and sous-chef. Much more than name, age, and profession is not yet known. How the singles really are, the program itself will show.

What stands out about the group?

When you lay the list side by side, a few things stand out. We count:

• The age: the youngest is Mika (26), the oldest participants are 34. There are five: Ashley, Lina, Gijs, Martijn G. and Rajiv. On average, the women are 31 and the men are also 31.
• The recruitment profession: three women work in recruitment: Claire, Marli and Yasemin.
• The legal corner: Chanel is a lawyer, Elvira is a corporate lawyer and Marc is a lawyer.
• The entrepreneurs: Margaretha, Gino, Ludo and Roël are owners of or entrepreneurs with their own company.
• The IT corner: Khalilu and Wouter both work in IT.
• The creatives: Mirella is a fashion designer, Gijs is a photographer, and Etienne combines event planning with a career as a DJ.
• Two Martijns: there are two men named Martijn, one is 34 and the other is 32. Keep them apart.

It's a group that seems to have a lot in common on paper: career-oriented, in their thirties or just before, and with a clear idea of what they are looking for. Whether that also applies to love remains to be seen in the program. Our first impression of the season

Our editor Marit Schutten watched the first two episodes during the Love is Blind: Netherlands watch party. The verdict in one word: amazing. A lot happens, the first connections are made, and afterwards our editor felt that the upcoming episodes could bring many surprises.

What we find important: spoilers are not here. That also fits with how the format works. The tension lies in the question of who actually matches with whom, and you want to answer that question yourself.

The question at the heart of it all

After the first two episodes, our editor was particularly curious about the moment when the singles will actually see each other. Because that's when it really gets exciting. Is the person with whom you have such a strong emotional click exactly as you expected? Or does reality turn out to be just a bit different?

One thing is for sure: after those first episodes, our editor already had some suspicions about who would ultimately choose each other. Whether those are correct, we will only know when the entire season is online.

Are you watching Love is Blind for the first time? Here's how to approach it

• Start with episode one. The pods are the heart of the program and all couples are formed there.
• Keep an eye on the names. With thirty singles, you need a bit of a cheat sheet. Use the tables above.
• Mark October 14. That's the day of ‘The Wedding’, where you see if the couples really say yes.
• Avoid social media. Anyone who doesn't want the season spoiled should better not scroll through the comments.
• Watch together. With this format, it's fun to guess who will make it.

Ten well-known Dutch and Flemish singles are looking for love in a villa under the Spanish sun.
