Movies & series › Titles, cast & explanation

Sometimes you don't want a prestige drama or a murder case, but just a summer love with sun, sea, and two families that can't stand each other. The Last Sunrise is exactly that: a forbidden romance in Mallorca, with a disease story that gives the film a bit more weight than the average holiday fling. Below you can read everything you want to know in advance, without us spoiling the plot.

What is The Last Sunrise about?

Ry is a young dancer who is primarily concerned about which step follows which. Until she has an epileptic seizure while dancing and it turns out she has tuberous sclerosis. This is a rare genetic condition that causes various benign tumors to form in the body. The tumors in her head cause the seizures.

She has two options. Medication, which according to the film makes her numb. Or surgery, with the chance that she will lose all her memories. Ry chooses the pills and travels with her overprotective mother Isolde to Mallorca, the island where her mother grew up.

There she meets Julián García, a local fisherman. He shows her the real Mallorca, outside the luxury resorts: beaches, boat trips, and motorcycle rides to places where ordinary tourists never go. Ry wants to experience what it's like to not be a patient for once, and decides to stop her medication. Dangerous, but according to her, worth the risk. Gradually, she falls for Julián. That can't happen, because like in every telenovela, their families are arch-enemies. It's Romeo & Juliet on a Spanish island.

What makes the film different from an ordinary summer romance?

On paper, it has the entire summer love handbook: beautiful lead actors, a place where the sun never stops shining, and characters with secrets. Yet the film wants to be more than a romantic holiday story à la Dirty Dancing. Ry's illness and her mother's panic are central. This raises the question of how much risk you can take to feel truly alive, and what the consequences of that are.

Clichés are also present, we admit that honestly: dramatic misunderstandings, a new antagonist, and a business conflict that threatens to ruin a relationship. That's part of the genre. But the illness is not a standard ingredient. The story is inspired, according to our article, by a true story: the author of the book has a son who suffers from the same disease. Therefore, you see not a character trapped in a chronic condition, but someone who is allowed to fall in love, make mistakes, and dream about the future.

Fernando LinezJulián García, local fishermanÉlite, SKAM España, Scandal: Story of an Obsession

Maia Reficco

Maia Reficco is an Argentine-American actress and singer. You might know her as Noa Olivar from Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin and as Montana from Kally’s Mashup. On stage, she played Eurydice in the Broadway musical Hadestown.

Fernando Linez

Fernando Linez plays Julián. You might recognize his face from Élite, SKAM España, and Scandal: Story of an Obsession. Julián is the fisherman who shows Ry what there is to experience outside the hotel walls, and who ironically has little to do with tourists in the film.

Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria, known as Gabriella Solis from Desperate Housewives, plays Ry’s mother Isolde. Her character is overprotective, and it turns out not without reason: she is right that Ry is getting sicker. Additionally, Julián's father Mateo and the character Carlos appear, about whom you can read more below.

Is The Last Sunrise based on a book by Anna Todd?

Yes, but with a twist. The book by Anna Todd, the author of the After books, actually started as a film script. Therefore, it was not difficult to translate it to the screen: first script, then book, now again film. The main lines from the book have remained exactly the same. Ry goes to Mallorca with her mother, falls in love with Julián, and tells him nothing about her illness.

What has changed compared to the book?

  • Carlos has been added. This character is meant to bring some extra tension to the romance.
  • Less Mateo. You see less of the relationship between Julián and his father Mateo.
  • Less background on Isolde. Also, what Mateo has to do with Ry’s mother gets less space.

Haven't read the book? Then you miss nothing. Have you read it? Then you recognize the story, with a few shifts in the subplots.

Where was The Last Sunrise filmed?

Not in a studio with a greenscreen. A summer love needs a real warm climate, so it was filmed in Mallorca. The cast and crew stayed there for two months. Our travel editorial team selected the locations and wrote a separate piece about it: The Last Sunrise was filmed at these locations in Mallorca. The main locations listed:

LocationWhat is it?
Sa FortalesaSeventeenth-century fortress by the bay of Pollença, now an estate with two swimming pools. In the film, the luxury hotel.
DeiàCoastal village on the World Heritage List, in a valley at the foot of the Teix mountain. Part of Ry’s discovery journey.
ValldemossaMountain village in the Tramuntana mountain range with a Carthusian monastery from the fourteenth century.
Cala MarcellaBay with white sand and turquoise water, this year number 12 on a list of the 50 best beaches in the world.

Want to do it yourself? Deià is located at a rugged bay that “could be in National Geographic”, and in Valldemossa you must (yes, must) try coca de patata, a bun made of potato, sugar, and egg. It sounds strange, but it is said to be delicious.

What did we think of it?

Our reviewer has not kept it a secret: The Last Sunrise became the new favorite film. Not high art, but a film that fully engages you in less than two hours with the warmest summer love of the season. Yes, there are clichés. But as we see it: sometimes that's exactly what you feel like.

What elevates the film above average is that it takes its protagonist seriously. Ry is not a pathetic girl who needs to be saved. She makes a difficult choice and has to live with the consequences. That gives the romance some weight, without smothering the summer vibe. You can read the full review here: The Last Sunrise: this forbidden summer love in Mallorca is one you want to see.

For whom is the film suitable and not?

Well something for you if
  • you're in the mood for a forbidden summer love with drama
  • you don't get tired of your Romeo & Juliet stories and feuding families
  • you want to daydream about Mallorca
  • you want a story with a sad edge and a tear
Less something for you if
  • you're allergic to dramatic misunderstandings
  • you expect an original plot without genre clichés
  • you don't feel like a sickness story
